Top 5 Coffee Brewing Methods

The Pour Over Method

The pour over technique is one of the most convenient and straightforward ways to brew coffee. It’s been used commonly since the 1900's but recently gained popularity with the speciality coffee movement.

To brew up with the pour over method, simply pour hot water through coffee grounds in a pour over bag. These are individually sealed bags placed over your mug where the water will drain through the grounds creating a perfect serving of coffee. No need for grinders, filters, or presses. Simply pour hot water into the bag. The ultimate in convenience and great taste.

Compared to other brewing techniques, the pour over method is a popular choice for creating single serve coffee while accentuating the flavours and aromas. It creates a clear and clean coffee by catching a lot of the oils while being brewed at a consistent time and pressure.

The French Press Method

The French Press is also known as a cafetiere or a coffee press. The machine consists of a cylinder shaped beaker with a plunger and creates a heavy and dense coffee. To brew up using a French Press, follow the steps below:

➣ Step 1: Fill the French Press to a boil, about 12 Oz (350g) of water is recommended for a 17-Oz press.

➣ Step 2: Grind your coffee while the water is boiling. It is best to have a coarse, even grind for French press coffee. A 1:12 coffee to water ratio is recommended (30g of coffee with 350g of water).

➣ Step 3: Start by pouring twice the amount of water than your coffee onto the coffee grounds (for 30g of coffee it is recommended to start with 60g of water).

➣ Step 4: Stir the grounds gently with a chopstick or similar and give it 30 seconds to bloom.

➣ Step 5: Pour the rest of the water and gently place the lid over the coffee grounds. Steep the coffee for exactly 4 minutes.

➣ Step 6: Remove the French press from the scale gently and place on the counter. Then, press the filter down. Once you've finished pressing, serve the coffee right away.

The French Press method gains an advantage by allowing you to brew up according to your individual taste. The size and type of coffee grounds, the amount of time you steep the grounds, the temperature of water, and other factors can all be varied depending on your preferences. Using a French Press also retains more natural oils from the grounds, giving your coffee a finer taste. It is also small enough to be carried around if you're always on the go. It is recommended by most French Press users to buy whole beans and grind them yourself as it should not be grounded too finely with this technique.

The Moka Pot Method

The Moka Pot brewing technique relies on stovetop steam that generates pressure which pushes up the coffee grounds, creating an espresso style coffee. The result is a hearty and robust cup of coffee. Here's the proper way to brew up using a Moka pot (using a 6-cup moka pot as an example).

➣ Step 1: Grind up 20-22g of fine coffee grounds.

➣ Step 2: Fill up the bottom chamber of the moka pot with water up until it levels with the valve. This should be about 345g of water. Then place the funnel into the moka pot, over the water. Make sure there is no excess water entering the funnel.

➣ Step 3: Fill the funnel with coffee grounds, make sure you do not tamp the grounds. Level the grounds and wipe the rim clean.

➣ Step 4: Tightly screw the top of the moka pot on.

➣ Step 5: Place the moka pot on the stove at medium heat.

➣ Step 6: As the water within the pot boils, the pressure will push a stream of coffee into the upper chamber. While this is happening, you'll hear a gurgling sound. Once the sound stops and the coffee has all flowed into the upper stream, immediately remove the moka pot from the heat. Pour your coffee into a mug and enjoy!
