Get Sh*t Done With: Josh Summersgill

May 24th, 2021

This month we spoke to gymnast turned weightlifter Josh, who quit his 9-5 to do what he loved and train others in the gym.

Meet Josh, a coffee-fuelled, fully certified British Weightlifting Coach; laser focused on helping people achieve what they previously believed to be impossible. Even becoming a first-time Dad during lockdown can’t phase this uber driven performance coach. We talk rice for breakfast and where to find that motivation...

Thanks for chatting with us! How do you wake up + what’s first on your agenda in the morning?

Up until recently my morning routine was pretty dialled in. I'd roll out of bed, straight into a cold shower (massive Wim Hof fan boy), coffee, read, meditate and then off to coach at the gym. However, after my son was born 4 months ago, it's more like roll out of bed, carry my son downstairs in a zombie-like trance, make a coffee, and then watch either Moana or Finding Nemo whilst smacking a plastic piano... so rock and roll!

What’s your typical breakfast?

Now I love my breakfast, but most people say it's pretty weird (which it kind of is). Every morning I have a bowl of spicy rice with mozzarella, a diced pepper, a protein shake with blended oats, and of course a big cup of coffee!

What’s your favourite way to brew up?

The Black Insomnia pods are definitely a favourite when I'm short on time, followed closely by the pour overs bags. My go to coffee would be a Cappuccino, so a good espresso from ground beans is key. That being said, I'll drink any kind of coffee. If it's pre-workout I'd go espresso, not to be confused with an "expresso". Rumour has it that everytime someone says that, an Italian falls off their Vespa, but who knows.

When did you get into weightlifting and why?

I made the transition to Weightlifting from Gymnastics about 6 years ago. I became exposed to Weightlifting thanks to CrossFit. I tried to teach myself at first and no surprise hit a low ceiling very early on. After playing around for a bit I decided that I really enjoyed the challenge and started with my coach Adam Travis. I fell in love with the highs, the lows and everything in between that comes with Weightlifting. Interestingly enough, now that I am a better Weightlifter, certain gymnastic elements that I have not performed for years actually now feel easier.

When you’re training, what is it that motivates you to push yourself?

When it's all said and done and I'm no longer able to train, when I look back at my life, I want to look back and know that I pushed myself as far as I could doing something that I love. I don't truly know how far (or not) I can go in the sport, but every time I step into the gym, I am going to empty the tank and make sure I'm one step closer.

What’s more important to you: work harder or play harder?

At the moment, work harder. However, if you don't take the time away from work and enjoy it, it can be extremely detrimental to your progress. Ibiza and Magaluf were great but they are now distant memories and many moons ago!

How have you found life during lockdown?

For all the downsides, I actually feel super lucky, I've been able to spend every day with my wife and son since he was born! Obviously it hasn't been great from a work point of view, but things are picking back up now so everything is on the up and up!

What’s your advice for others who are finding training alone/at home tough right now?

The main thing I would say to people is to simply start back training, and put zero pressure on themselves. Obviously if you haven't trained for months, you won't be where you were, but that doesn't mean that you won't get back there. If you love your training, then just simply starting back will not only make you feel better, but will help you to gain momentum to create consistency going forward.

We massively appreciate Josh taking time out of his busy schedule to sit down and answer our questions so thoughtfully. We’ve certainly got some huge take-aways that we’re gonna put to good use, and we hope you’ve found something that resonates with you too.
